FCF is dedicated to educational projects as a means to promote community development in villages. Access to formal education is limited in the remote areas where we work and we have recognized the need to support the villages through a range of projects directed at improving their accessibility to education, especially environmental education.
Buildings
In many schools the classrooms are packed and several students have to sit at each desk. This is clearly not conducive for learning; by engaging in building projects FCF increases the capacity of the school to serve the young people in the community. FCF sponsors many building projects, including school classrooms, teachers’ housing and girls’ boarding hostels.
In rural areas it is important for secondary schools to cater to those students who come from far afield and cannot find accommodation locally. This is why FCF has been supportive of efforts to build student hostels for a number of secondary schools.
Sponsorship Program
Education is rarely taken for granted in Tanzania. High school students are very keen to learn and eager to succeed academically. Unfortunately for many students, especially for those in the rural areas, the cost of education is prohibitive, which means that many young people never have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
We are currently sponsoring over 50 students through their high school education.
These students are encouraged to be leaders in the environmental clubs which are also gaining strength through FCF’s support.
Mali Hai Clubs and Tree Nursery
In many of the secondary schools we have Mali Hai Environmental Clubs, many of whom are starting tree nurseries.
Replanting trees is becoming increasingly important in Tanzania as illegal charcoal and timber poaching is causing deforestation which degrades soil, destroys wildlife habitat and intensifies the causes of poverty.
Tree nurseries in a secondary school not only improve the environment but it will also strengthen the Mali Hai clubs and raise environmental awareness.
Film Screening Unit
Environmental education and an understanding of the importance of conservation are critical to the future of the environment in Tanzania. Using an Environmental Film Screening Unit we have been able to reach young and old and raise the awareness in villages.
This has assisted communities in valuing their natural resources and working towards conservation practices and sustainable natural resource management for maintaining livelihoods in the village now and for future generations.
